Maintaining
the Aldera
“Canadian Tough” means more than simply being sturdy and resilient
to damage. It also means the Aldera is easy to maintain, either in a repair
shop or in the field. As an S-LSA, the Aldera offers maintenance options
that are not available to contemporary FAA type certificated airplanes,
like a Cessna 172 or piper Archer.
Owner Maintenance
As an Aldera owner, you will receive documentation that exceeds anything
delivered with contemporary, FAA type certificated airplanes. The Aldera
Aircraft Operating Instructions (AOI) will contain specific information
as to how you will participate in the continued airworthiness program
of your Aldera. You will also receive a detailed maintenance manual which
clearly defines maintenance that you are authorized to perform.
As
a certificated pilot, the Aldera Maintenance Manual will permit you to
perform all preventive maintenance tasks defined in FAR 43, Appendix A.
This section of the FAR’s lists 24 preventive maintenance tasks
that you may perform, saving you both money and time. RAMtech will also
define additional owner authorized maintenance tasks that may not be found
in FAR 43.
Advanced Maintenance
The Aldera Maintenance Manual also details what qualifications are needed
to perform advanced maintenance functions, such as the repair of composite
surfaces or major engine service. Advanced maintenance may be limited
to a Light-Sport Repairman with a Maintenance Rating (more on this rating
to follow), an Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT, or more commonly
known as an A&P), a repair station or overhaul center. The RAMtech
Customer Service center stands ready to help you in all service and maintenance
needs.
Light-Sport Repairman with a Maintenance Rating
Yes, this is something new that applies only to an S-LSA like the Aldera.
With contemporary airplanes, like a Cessna or a Piper, most maintenance
must by performed by a properly rated Aviation Maintenance Technician.
Such technicians undergo years of training due to the wide variety of
airplanes on which they may work. Such skills may exceed the needs of
an individual simply wishing to become more involved in the advanced maintenance
of their Aldera.
The
Light-Sport Repairman with Maintenance Rating changes the paradigm of
airplane maintenance. The FAA has authorized the creation of a 120 hour
training program that specifically targets the technology being used in
an S-LSA. Special attention is paid to the advanced technology being used
in the Aldera.
Most
important, this repairman certificate targets the skills needed to properly
inspect an S-LSA so that a Light-Sport Repairman with a Maintenance Rating
may also complete the annual condition inspections. While many Aldera
owners will not wish to avail themselves of this training, it offers flight
schools some interesting business plan options.
